Position is 204 working days and 11 paid Holidays; a typical work week Monday - Friday with an expectation of no more than 40 hours per week. For weeks with less than five working days, daily hours only apply. Occasional evening and Saturday work may be required. Requires use of own vehicle to conduct business. Part-time summer work may be available and may be required depending on agency needs for full time staff and is a requirement for part-time staff with a beginning employment date of July 15, 2013 or later.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have a Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Nursing, Health Education, Health Promotion, or related field or certification as a certified medical assistant.

• Two years relevant experience in Health Education or Health Services related field providing health services for low-income clientele or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

• Bilingual in Spanish is required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and to develop solutions to problems with limited supervision.

• Use a computer to collect, record, and retrieve data and prepare reports.

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and administer activities.
  • Read, understand and interpret health records and plan appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to plan, formulate and execute record keeping procedures in accordance with assigned duties.

• Knowledge of preventive medicine and sanitation.

• Ability to prioritize and manage work load and meet strict deadlines

• Ability to write and speak the English language in a proficient and professional manner to meet requirements of the job.
• Ability to work independently and as a team to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, families, community groups, and other related agencies and people.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE):

1. Under the direction of the Health Services Coordinator, administers health screenings, such as vision, hearing, blood pressure, height/weight and other measurements, dietary screenings and others as appropriate.

2. Collaborates with Family Advocates to support families in establishing and maintaining medical and dental homes by assisting each Head Start family become educated about community resources to meet their health needs.

3. Helps families obtain all required nutrition-related assessments, treatments and follow-
up.

4. Plans, conducts, and arranges for staff and parent trainings concerning health, safety, first aid, nutrition and emergency medical procedures. Acts as a resource and provides orientation and training to staff responsible for implementing health service plans and requirements. Assists teachers in the implementation of a health and nutrition education curriculum. Confers with and counsels staff and parents regarding health issues.

5. Works closely with Family Advocates and teaching staff using a multi-disciplinary team approach to accomplish all tasks.

6. For assigned children, reviews, evaluates, interprets, updates and prepares reports regarding health records, vital statistics and other data affecting health services.

7. Inventories first aid kits at assigned sites regularly and replaces items as needed. Prepares orders and requisitions for health service supplies such as toothbrushes. Promotes health and safety practices within the program by observing health and hygiene practices in classrooms and other facilities, and recommends corrective action when needed.

8. Develops and updates a list of local health resources, and makes referrals and collaborates with Family Advocates in making referrals to appropriate agencies. Establishes positive working relationships with local medical and dental providers serving as an advocate for children’s health.

9. Trains staff to ensure proper administration and distribution of medication.

10. Utilizes ChildPlus and other Information Systems to support family/agency outcomes for assigned children.

11. Demonstrates understanding of the child abuse/neglect laws. Reports suspected child abuse to the Family & Community Services Director.

12. Supports the achievement of in-kind goals by actively participating in the solicitation of in-kind services and donations to the Head Start program including, but not limited to, encouraging community members and organizational contacts to volunteer, provide donations of professional services, supplies, and anything else needed to support the Head Start program.

13. Collaborates with other service areas to ensure seamless services to children and families and ensures we are staying true to our mission and vision. Attends and participates in staff and parent training sessions, as directed, i.e. pre-service, orientations, in-service training meetings and other agency activities as required.

14. Expected to provide temporary assistance in the classrooms to meet minimum child to staff ratios, or to ensure the safety of children, in the absence of sufficient Education and Child Development Service Area staff. Staff from any service area working or present at a center when the need arises will be called upon first, with Administrative Office staff being utilized if insufficient staff is present on site.

15. Expected to assist the agency in maintaining safe and healthy environments for children and staff by immediately reporting health and safety risks/concerns or potential concerns to a leadership staff member and/or via our internal work order system and follow up with appropriate staff in a timely or appropriate manner.

16. Other job-related duties as assigned may be necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position.
